Birthday Boys

Last week, we celebrated two birthdays: Andrew turned 3 on Sunday and Ricky turned 6 on Wednesday.

Andrew requested a "Phineas and Ferb" cake for his birthday. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to make a Phineas and Ferb cake. As Andrew's birthday neared, I decided that rather than making an actual cake in the shape of Phineas or Ferb, I would buy figurines, stick them on the cake, and call it good. Saturday night, I finally got to the store to look for Phineas and Ferb. I was unsuccessful. Somehow we managed to talk Andrew into a car cake. I was glad for the change because since it was also Mother's Day, I didn't have a big "cake project" to complete.

Andrew is so excited about being a 3-year old, but sometimes he acts like he is much older. He is kind of bossy sometimes and acts like the family "know-it-all." He is always right and always in charge. Our lunch conversation last Tuesday illustrates my point . . . I asked him, "What would you like to eat for lunch?" He replied, "Just applesauce and apple juice." I gladly got him some applesauce and apple juice, but since I am such a good mother who knows that applesauce and apple juice doesn't make a well-rounded meal, I asked "What else would you like?" Andrew was insistent that only applesauce and apple juice would do. I was equally insistent that he should probably eat something else in addition to those two things, but since I was hungry myself, I gave up and got myself lunch. After a few minutes, I tried one more time. "How about a bagel, or some bread?"

Andrew replied in a tone that sounded so much like me, "What did I say?" and then gave me the look I often give him that says, "How many times have I told you to . . . ."

After a discussion about treating me with respect, I went back to eating my well-rounded lunch while he finished his apple sauce and apple juice.

That's a 3-year-old for you . . . at least that's this 3-year old. Andrew's birthday was a fun, busy day. Because it was Mother's Day, we went to church and didn't celebrate his day until the evening. He requested homemade breadsticks for dinner. Then, we opened presents.

He was so excited about his Spiderman scooter. Ricky also got one on his birthday.
He also loved his "doggy" from Grandma and Grandpa Mergenthaler. He named the dog Snickers. He and Ricky enjoyed the books from Grandma and Grandpa Gudgel. All of the children spent the rest of the evening and the next few days reading the new books.
After we opened presents, the missionaries came over to have cake and ice cream with us. This kids were a little riled up before bed, but they eventually settled down and went to sleep.
Ricky's birthday was just as fun. Ricky is so easily excitable, and he just couldn't wait to turn 6!
He think he is so big now and often comments on how old he is.
Ricky (and all of the children) are excited to set up the swimming pool that Ricky got. Unfortunately, the weather here has been unusually cool. I have promised the children that when we have a forecast of three days in a row above 80 degrees that we will fill up the pool.
Makayla's present to Ricky this year has an amusing story to go along with it. In the morning at breakfast, she told Ricky that she hadn't had the time she wanted to make him a special gift, so her present to him that day would be to treat him kindly and be nice to him.
Throughout the day, Makayla had a hard time following up on her promise to be kind. At dinner, Makayla was making a snide comment to Ricky. I reminded Makayla, "Didn't you say your gift to Ricky was that you would be extra nice to him today?" Makayla said, "Well, that's just too hard, so I'm just going to have to think of something else."
What did she do instead? She dressed up and choreographed a dance to perform for him. At our house, we usually hide the presents for the birthday person to find. So, Makayla dressed up, hid in a corner and waited to be found. Once she was found, Emily cued the music and her performance began. It was cute and funny, but lengthy. After watching Makayla dance for a few minutes, the audience got distracted. I taped Ricky's reaction to Makayla's impromptu "gift." You can hear Rick saying, "OK are you done?"

Here's another funny thing. Ricky's birthday cake was a dinosaur cake. He got the idea from Andrew's car birthday cake and decorated it all by himself. He was so excited about how his cake turned out that he got a little too close. Watch the video. Later that evening when I was helping him brush his teeth, I noticed a spot on his head where his hair had been burnt by the candles. After closer inspection, I noticed that his eyelashes on his left eye had burnt to half their length.

Oh, the hazards of birthday celebrations!

Andrew sounds like he has Riley's personality. That's how it is around here, Riley is the boss. Maybe it has something to do with being the 4th child. Happy b-day boys!
