All in One Day!!

August 5th was a crazy day for us. Many of you know that Emily turned 11 on that day, but that's not all that happened at our house . . .

We had been on schedule to have our roof replaced for quite some time. There were no thunderstorms forecasted on Emily's birthday, so the roofers were going to try to replace our entire roof in one day!!

At 8 a.m. a crew of about 20 workers arrived along with a dumpster and several trucks of supplies. By the time I was leaving to take the kids to swimming lessons at 10 a.m., the roof was almost completely stripped.

When I arrived back home at noon, the workers were leaving for lunch. They already had some of the new roof on!
At 4 p.m., they began cleaning up, and by 5 p.m. they were gone!
In the midst of our roof getting replaced, our new backyard play set was delivered and set up.

The kids were so excited about the playset that I could hardly get them to eat lunch. They camped out on the screened-in portion of our porch to watch the progress.
I thought the screened-in porch was a safe place for the kids to watch the work. They were protected from things flying off the roof from the guys working up there and they were out of the way of the guys out in the yard working on the playset. I realized I was wrong about them being safe, however, when I was putting Andrew and Sean down for naps and heard wild screaming from the backyard. Emily came upstairs and frantically exclaimed, "Makayla's toenail had just fallen off!" I said, "What? Toenails don't just 'fall off'." I rushed downstairs to discover that Makayla had been sitting on the porch watching the progress when the banging on the roof knocked down our round, metal, thermometer that we have hanging on the back porch. It fell right on her big toe and her toe was a bloody, mangled mess.
I got her in the house to clean, elevate, and ice her toe. Once I got her calm, I tried to think how I would get her to the Dr. for an X-ray. Rick was still driving home from Des Moines (he had flown in from a conference that morning) and was scheduled to meet with a lawyer soon after he arrived home. I didn't think I could carry Makayla into the Dr. along with 4 other children. I also wasn't sure how I was going to finish our birthday party preparations, make dinner, and get Andrew to soccer. It was just too much in the few hours I had before our big birthday party.
Thankfully, Makayla was able to calm down. After an hour or so, she felt better and a Dr. appointment wasn't needed.
The playset people left at around 3 p.m., and because I was worried about future injuries, I made the kids stay inside until the roofers left. It was awful torture, but they finally got outside while I made dinner.
I tried to convince Emily that a new roof and a playset were enough birthday presents, but she knew I had already gotten her a few other things.
She got a new backpack for school, a game called Quelf, and a desk for her room (which she has been asking for on every birthday and holiday since we moved here).
She also got a cute stamp set from Grandma and Grandpa Mergenthaler, a gift card at Target from Grandma and Grandpa Gudgel, and a thoughtful birthday card from Uncle Daniel.
Happy birthday Emily!!!
It was a busy day, but we survived!
I noticed I haven't included many pictures of Sean lately. He has started eating solid foods. Let me tell you, it is a pain to teach babies how to eat from a spoon!! So messy and time intensive!!

He's a cutie, though, and soooo good!! At 6 months old, he is great at rolling all over the place. He is working on scooting. He likes to babble and imitate things we say or do. He's so much fun to have around! Doesn't he look like Makayla did at this age?

How could he be six months already? And Emily 11? I don't like this growing up thing. Now that Jake's potty trained, I'm going to wave my magic wand and freeze all of my children at their current age. Do you think it will work? Happy belated b-day Emily!

Yes Sean looks so much like Makayla crazy. I miss you guys and hate to see the kids growing up so fast without living right next door. Love you.

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
