Golden Birthday

Sean celebrated his 1st birthday on February 1st.  Because we were on an airplane plane to Disney World that day, we celebrated his birthday (along with Makayla's) on the Sunday before we left.

One of Sean's favorite foods is macaroni and cheese, so his birthday dinner was easy to make and all of the kids liked it.
After dinner, we opened presents.  He likes things that light up and make noise.  So we got him a little bear that sings and wiggles its ears.  We also got him new pacifiers.  I think he is our first baby since Emily that loves "binkies".  Usually by the time our babies hit one year I have broken them of the binkie habit, but Sean is a little tougher.  I don't like kids to be sucking on a pacifier when they should be talking.  I have tried to make the rule that he can only have his binkie at bed time or in the car, but I haven't been great at enforcing it.
Birthday cake was after presents.  He liked the cake enough to eat some, but he especially loved the homemade fudge frosting and whip cream on top.

Sean is a sweet boy and we love having him in our family.  I'm bracing myself for toddlerhood.  Just this week he has gotten much more vocal during our nightly scripture study.  He is soo loud lately that I have had to break my binkie rule and plug him up so we can hear Rick read the scriptures.  His noises are happy and cute, so it is hard to not just let him be the center of attention and make everybody laugh.

Sean LOVES playing in the bathroom.  We try to keep the bathroom doors closed, but with a big, busy family, sometimes we forget and he sneaks on in.  Luckily, he isn't into playing in the toilet too much (unless the lid is left open).  His favorite thing to do is pull all of the toilet paper off the roll.  I was working on a lesson for Primary when I heard some noises in the bathroom.  By the time I realized the noises were from Sean and not somebody else, this is what I found:
It didn't take him long to pull all of the toilet paper off a newly replaced double roll.  It took me a while to wind it all back up.
I think all of our kids are cute, but one-year olds are sometimes just too cute for words.  Sean was really excited about the ice cream truck from Grandma Mergenthaler.  After a week, he still loves it (and so does Andrew).

Oh...Sean is so cute. I am happy that Kelsee will have a cousin close to her age. We sure do miss you and each time I look at your blog it seems time has gone by quicker and the kids are all getting so big. It seems just yesterday we were celebrating Emily's 1st birthday. Then in the blink of an eye she is almost 12. Am I starting to sound OLD? ugh. Happy birthday Sean. Can't wait to meet you in person.

I hope you don't have 3 comments from me. I'm really only trying to post one. I agree that one year olds are so cute...and lots of work. Jake is just starting to leave that lots of work stage...of course, he did spill grape juice on the carpet today so maybe not so much.

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
