Travelling is Tough

Having completed a long trip that took us on 4 separate flights and several scenic drives to a myriad of locations, we have compiled a list of helpful tips for weary family travelers:

Tip #1:  Catch naps where and when you can--even if it is only a half hour long ride in the back of the rental car.

Tip #2:  Saving money by not checking baggage may not be as practical as it sounds.  Managing 5 children, 6 carryons, 6 personal bags, 2 car seats, and one stroller may cause confusion and frustration.

Tip #3:  When the temperature is 117 degrees outside, do not insist on carrying your new green backpack that is half your size, or you may look like a red-faced turtle.  In addition, your mom may get concerned looks from other well-meaning travelers.
Tip #4:  Meal times can be very irregular and unpredictable.  Eat what you can when you can.  It's OK to break rules like "no more bottles" or "only milk in bottles."

For example, orange soda is a nice pick me up on a hot afternoon in Las Vegas.

Pink lemonade or chocolate milk are OK too.

But, when your grandma tells you to eat your green beans, you better do it if you want to have another breadstick.

Tip #5:  Do not wear your favorite shorts with a metal ring on them through airport security.  Even though you are only four years old, you will be frisked after the alarm sounds.  When you find out you will be frisked, do not hug your mom's leg because then she will have to be frisked as well because there is a chance that you have passed her dangerous weapons or toxic chemicals.

We hope you find these family-friendly tips helpful on your next trip.

I'll have to remember the tips about the metal rings on shorts for 4 year olds...no metal. I am not looking forward to the trips to the airport even though I am excited about going to Washington. I love the picture of the kids sleeping. You've got to wonder how they do it.

Great to see what your family is up to. I am so jealous, with all our road trips this summer, my kids have not slept one wink in the car. It must have been a peaceful trip...at least that's what it looks like from the pictures!
