Kids really do say and do some funny things.
Our neighbor's house was broken into a while back and since then, Sean has been a little worried about "robins." When he first brought up his fear of robins, I was confused and taken aback. He said,"I see a robin outside our house. I am going to get him before he comes in." It's winter time, so we don't see many birds--especially robins who usually come out in spring. It didn't take much more questioning on my part to discover that he was actually talking about robbers.
Today, Sean wanted to go out in the woods and get a stick to play with. Since it was a balmy 20 degrees, I decided to let him outside for a bit. Before he walked out the door, he said "Do you see any robins? I don't. I think it's safe to go. I will get a good stick to beat the robins with."
Last week while he was in the bath, Sean told me about all of his special powers. He told me Jesus gave him these special powers. He listed robin killing power first along with eye opening power and eye closing power, swimming power, eating power, and cleaning power. Not bad--except for the killing part. We had a talk about what was the appropriate course of action if we ever did encounter a "robin."
Another person in our family has cleaning power, along with some other very special qualities. Makayla has a new nickname. It describes some of her special talents very well. We call her Mama Makayla. It sounds best if you say it kind of loud with an Italian accent. Mama Makayla is really good with kids. She takes good care of Brooklyn and the boys. She also likes to cook and bake. She is an awesome cleaner and does good work when she is assigned a job. Best of all, Mama Makayla has a great sense of humor and the ability to have fun in a variety of not-so-fun situations. Last Saturday, Makayla's job was the bathrooms (and example of a not-so-fun situation). When I was in Brooklyn's room putting her down for a nap, I overheard Makayla talking to herself as she finished one of the bathrooms. She sounded like she was doing a teaching video on YouTube entitled, "How to Properly Clean a Bathroom." I could barely hear her, but it sounded like, "Then you get the anti-bacterial wipe, and hold it like so. Wipe throughly here and here. Don't forget behind the faucets! Make sure to make the countertop shine . . ." I quickly put Brooklyn in bed and zipped down the hall to see if I could catch her informative tutorial on video, but I was a little late. Believe me, it was funny. Makayla is often very funny without even knowing how funny she is.
The other night, Rick and I were wishing we had a super power that would allow us to pause time or give us more of it. There always seems to be so much work to do and so many demands on our time. We were wishing for just an hour each evening to relax, but no matter how we evaluated our shedules there didn't seem to be a right way to get that extra hour. I have decided we are doing what we should be doing and we are busy with the right things. After thinking about it more, even if we did have that special time creation power, whatever time we created would easily get filled. I'm happy with the time we have to spend as we will even if sometimes I feel like I'm barely keeping my head above water. Life is good and it is good in some part because it is hard. The difficult stuff helps us appreciate our blessings, and we are certainly very blessed.
By the way, Ricky is doing great. He is back to school and doesn't need pain medications anymore. In fact, he is getting a little overconfident and that worries me some. It is hard for him to avoid running and roughhousing with his brothers. It is especially hard for him to not pick up Brooklyn. He just loves his baby sister and she certainly loves him.
