After four nights in the hospital, all of us were ready for the adventure to end. We were hopeful in the morning that after the ok from the neurosurgeon, we would be released. The neurosurgeon said OK, but then somebody brought up a concern about Ricky having a fever. Around 11 am, the nurse said, "It looks like you might be able to check out today, but they want to wait until Ricky has been 24 hours without a fever, so it looks like you may be out later this evening." We teach our children to be respectful and kind--especially when people are trying to help us, but I couldn't stop myself from rolling my eyes and sighing, "That's ridiculous."
We set out to proving to anybody near our room that Ricky was well enough to be out. It helped that Andrew stayed behind to play with him while we waited. They were kind of rambunctious.
They played games and made jokes. I made Ricky take a shower and brush his teeth. We went for multiple walks.
When the nurse came to check his temperature at noon, she said he was fever free. His oxygen levels had been high without assistance too. Finally, there was nothing to hold us there. After some slow paperwork and waiting on "convenient bed side delivery" of his prescriptions, we were out of there.
Some friends made him a cute sign. It was so good to have dinner together as a family.
He woke up pretty stiff this morning, but since then has been in good spirits. He has made it through half the day so far without taking strong pain medication (only Tylenol). He is happy and joking and well on the way to recovery.
His appetite has been another concern of mine, but that is improving as well. The chairs at our table were uncomfortable for him this morning, so we set up a soft chair by the table.
I think by tomorrow, the normal chairs won't even bother him. He really does seem to improve a lot each day.
We just got the news that school will be cancelled tomorrow due to "dangerously cold weather."
