You know already that Ricky is our early riser. Lately, he has been trying to get Andrew to wake up early with him. Sometimes it works, but usually it doesn't. This morning at breakfast Andrew and Ricky were talking about why Andrew didn't get up early. Andrew said, "I wanted to wake up early, but I was having the best dream. I was a scientist! It was awesome! Also, I was a stick figure. That was cool too." The dreamy look on Andrew's smiley face told me that he was reliving the best sciencey dream ever as he talked to Ricky. I just laughed to myself because it was such an Andrew-thing to say. While some boys are dreaming of super heroes, Andrew is a stick figure scientist. (I'm sure he has his share of super hero dreams too.)
Andrew truly is inquisitive. He remembers facts about all kinds of things. He actually likes to read non-fiction books because he finds them interesting. We are having some work done on the house and he's always right there asking questions about how things work. I don't always know, but when the head contractor is around, he is so nice to answer Andrew's questions and explain to him the science behind what they are doing.
The kids like to watch, but for Andrew, just watching isn't enough. He wants to know what happens next, where the materials come from, why they pour rock and cement where they do, how the cement truck works and why it is spinning, etc. He takes all that information and files it away. A couple of weeks ago, the contractor's wife said, "Tom got such a kick out of your son the other day. He explained to him why the cement boom needed to have supports on each side so that the weight of the cement wouldn't tip the truck and he came up with some thoughtful comments. How old is he?" He's only 7. He is just like a sponge for science and math.
Our little scientist is also a great big brother to Brooklyn lately. She truly loves him. She often hugs him and cuddles with him during scriptures. She likes to hold his hand on walks. He makes her laugh and plays with her. They are pretty cute together.
