...TRANSFER NEWS...

 May 8, 2023

Hey, what is going on, all my beautiful people?! This week was packed, and I'll get to transfer crud in a little bit, but first, I'm gonna explain what happened this week!!

On Tuesday, I had divisions with an elder who is dying tomorrow, which means he's going home from his mission. It was really good because he worked his butt off even though he is going home in less than a week. I'm not even kidding you, we found 5 new people to teach in one day. It was insane 😳!! I also got to see his talent for songwriting and singing, and I'm not even kidding, it was like I was back at home listening to Spotify, but in person. It was so dope! The next morning, I finally got to sit and share a Mate with someone that actually drinks, so that was cool because mate is just better if you share, but I mean it's also really amazing if you don't, but ya!!

Wednesday morning, on our way to pick up Elder Sellers, we found one more person! And the finding didn't stop there--Elder Sellers and I found even a couple more after that. This week we found 11 in all even though our week was packed.

We got to have a future missionary go around with us for a little while. He is going to be leaving for Peru soon, and he got to experience a super special part of missionary work.  We were knocking at this house when I see this dude on the outside of my vision and I'm like,  "Hola!! Como esta??" Turns out he's one of the menos activos, so we get to talking, and he takes us back to his house. At his house, he tells us how much he needed to see us that day.  He tells us missionaries we are angels doing the Lord's work. He shares some of what's been going on with him and the Spirit was soo strong, like crazy strong, and after he gets done talking, we shared a scripture and gave him a copy of The Book of Mormon. Let me tell you, that man's face lit up when I gave him the book. He said he had been praying when we first saw him and me noticing him was an answer to his prayer. He said he needed a second chance and he's ready to take it. He told us that since we came to talk to him,  it was God telling him, "It's your time." It was such a great end to our day and so cool for the guy getting ready to go on his mission to be a part of it.

Thursday, I had interviews with President, and he told me that my great comp and I will be split, and that our efforts to fortify each other will go on to help us and our next companions. We're ready for that.

On Friday, we had zone conference,  so we got to spend time there and learn a lot! After zone conference, I had thee coolest talk with an Argentine during dinner at member's house. We got talking about the future and family, right, and he gave me insanely good Ideas:

1. Family comes before work!

2. Get a job that allows me to be my own boss so that I can have as much time with my kids as I want because time with my kids is priceless

3. Love your wife with all you got and make and keep your love young

4. Do what you're gonna do when you're old when you're young so that you actually have the energy to do it, haha.

One more miracle happened on Sunday. Elder Sellers and I had to travel to stake conference. Well, on the way there, we ran out of sube, which means we were gonna have to go expensive on the way back so we could use a taxi. Well, on our way out, a member said he would take us back so we didn't have to use any money!! Insane, right? That's the blessing you get for making a sacrifice to come to church!! So any kids that are like 13-17, bro, go to church! It's a blessing to go and to learn, and you never know--maybe the Lord will bless you with a free ride.

Anyway, I have to go, but I do have transfer news. I'm staying one more transfer (six weeks) as DL (district leader) in Punta Magotes, but I'm getting a new companion. He's from Chile. Sadly, Elder Sellers is leaving to a different area, but I'll have fun today with him, so we're good, hahaha.

I love you all so much!! And miss you much more!!

Love

Elder Mergenthaler

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
