I don't like being asked, "So, what are your weekend plans?" Not because I think people are nosy or because that usually means I'll have to sit through a list of all the fun things they will be doing that weekend, but because we rarely have any exciting weekend plans to share. Here is what our weekends are like:
Friday Night: Date night. Probably the best day of the week--not because we do anything really fun because we usually rent a movie and eat ice cream. It is the best day of the week because both Rick and I get to spend time with each other just relaxing without any responsibilities.
Saturday: Usually all work. Mow the lawn, clean the house, go to the kid's sports events if it is that time of year, and sometimes we have the missionaries over for dinner.
Sunday: Church, naps, usually a family walk around the neighborhood, and sometimes games with the kids.
That sounds like a great weekend to me, but usually when I'm asked what my plans are, I say, "Not a whole lot," just because there is nothing new or exciting about what we are doing. I usually like it that way and look forward to the weekends anyway.
Last weekend was different. We took a very last minute trip to Council Bluffs, IA/Omaha, NE. The main reason we went was to watch a production at the Kanesville Tabernacle called "Come Home to Kanesville." We had some friends in the production and I was looking forward to seeing it.
Rick, however, was not interested in going. He was looking forward to a weekend of relaxation, house work, and yard work. He was very sweet to consent to taking us and I hope he had a little bit of fun.
So, Friday night, we booked a hotel room (using some points we had) and packed our bags. We didn't really tell anybody we were going and I forgot to pack the cell phone, so that was a little problem on Sunday when we didn't show up to church and Rick hadn't gotten a sub for his class. It all worked out OK, though.
We left Saturday morning for the 3 1/2 hour drive to Council Bluffs, IA, but couldn't help but stop in Des Moines (1 1/2 hours into the trip) for a Costco run. Boy, do we need a Costco here. When you are choosing from 2 local grocery stores, Walmart, and Target, you really miss big grocery shopping. We spent a couple of hours at Costco and really loaded up our car (we brought a cooler with this intention in mind).
Then, we continued our trip to Council Bluffs and made it just in time for the play at the Tabernacle.
It was fun to see our friends and the kids loved the production. Sara is way cute in her pioneer clothes!
After the production we roamed around the grounds for a few minutes. But, honestly, I was more impressed with the beautiful flowers than the statues, etc, but I did my duty and took some pictures. Besides that, we were all hungry for dinner.
We went to dinner at Cracker Barrel and headed over the Missouri River to Omaha where our hotel was. Let me tell you, we stayed at a really nice place. I was so impressed with Rick's reservation skills. We stayed at a brand new Marriott that had only been open 3 months. When Rick checked in, he asked to be upgraded to a suite because we had the kids with us and thought we'd need a little more space. They had an open 2 room suite and upgraded us for free! It was so nice to have a door between us and the kids--especially when Andrew took 2 hours to settle down to sleep.

The kids thought the room was really neat, but their favorite part (as always) was swimming in the hotel pool.
I should have taken pictures of the lobby--I felt like a countess staying at that place. It was so nice--especially since I'm the type to settle for Motel 6 (not Rick).
Because the next day was Sunday, we didn't go to the Omaha Zoo, which I hear is definitely worth seeing.
Emily and I weren't speedy enough for Daddy and Makayla (and the stroller).

We all made it over the bridge (and back). It was hot and the kids were whining, but we had a nice picnic in the park (with more Costco food) and headed home. It was a nice weekend. I was impressed with Omaha (Council Bluffs was kind of dumpy--except for the Tabernacle grounds). I imagined Omaha like a city in a wind-blown plain (I know--I'm clueless). It is beautiful there and I look forward to going back someday but only if we will be able to make it a longer trip and spend a day at that famous zoo.

Instead, we took a walk over the pedestrian bridge that goes from Iowa to Nebraska over the Missouri River
