Busy, Busy, Busy. Work, Work, Work

A couple of months ago at dinner, Andrew asked "Where is Dad."

I replied, "Oh, he had to stay at work tonight to get some things done. He'll probably be home at bed time."

Andrew muttered to himself, "Busy, busy, busy. Work, work, work."

I don't know where he learned that, but it made me laugh. Ever since then, when I am particularly busy running from task to task, I hear Andrew's little voice in my head repeating that phrase.

I haven't been posting much lately not because there isn't much going on, but because I have been trying to keep up with all that is going on.

Spring

Thanks to some beautiful weather and very nice big sisters, Ricky has mastered his bike without training wheels. It sure took a long time--not because he couldn't catch on to the skill, but because we removed his training wheels right before winter.

Last November, Ricky was begging to have the training wheels removed from his Spiderman bike. Dad helped him practice a few times and then it snowed.

Rick promised Ricky a new bike helmet once he learned how to ride his bike, but snow and ice and freezing weather forced Ricky's bike into hibernation.

When things started warming up last month, Ricky begged for help to learn his bike so that he could earn a new helmet.

I was too busy inside with baby and other things, so the girls--Makayla especially--became Ricky's personal bike trainers.

It didn't take long, and Ricky finally earned a new Spiderman helmet.
Egg Hunting

On the Saturday morning before Easter, I took the kids (minus Emily who was at basketball practice with Dad) to an Easter egg hunt.
The kids had a lot of fun. Rick is the new ward mission leader, so we see the missionaries quite a bit. Elder Devries was nice to help Ricky and Andrew find some eggs. I think Elder Devries was more excited about the Easter egg hunt than the kids!!

Easter

On Easter morning, the kids were so excited to find their baskets that they woke me up at 6:30 a.m. I had to make a personal note to myself that next year I should remind the kids to stay in bed until at least 7 a.m.

Emily and Makayla were excited about their gardening supplies and flower seeds. They look cute, huh!!
After General Conference on Sunday, we spent some time dying Easter eggs.
Rick's Birthday

Last Monday, we celebrated Rick's 33rd birthday. The kids made him some very cute presents. They were so proud to give Daddy the gifts they had put so much time and love into.

Andrew

As we near the end of the school year, Andrew, Sean, and I are trying to take advantage of our time together each day.

We had some nice 80 degree days. We ate lunch outside most of those days. Usually, I would leave Sean napping in the house, but Andrew insisted that Sean needed to be a part of our picnic.
Andrew has said a couple of funny things lately. About a week ago, I asked Andrew to clean up his Dinosaur puzzle. Without argument, he began carrying the pieces of his puzzle from the family room to the kitchen where the box was. I suggested, "Andrew, why don't you take the box to the family room so that you don't have to take so many trips with your puzzle pieces?" He happily said, "That's OK, Mom. Don't worry. I won't trip."

Rick thinks some of you won't get this last one, but I'll share it anyway. Andrew likes chicken pot pie for dinner. He also likes to watch movies in the morning when the older kids are at school. I have accidentally acquired a "Popeye the Sailor Man" DVD by renting it from the library, losing it, paying the fine, and finding it again. Anyway, Andrew had finished his chores and wanted to watch a little show. He asked, "Mom, can I watch "Chicken Potpie the Sailor Man" today?"

Popeye is a great movie. I think that is funny! Life does get busy with five. I feel like I can't keep up (and it's been that way for over two years now.)

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
