Dislike: Lemonade Stands

I think lemonade stands are obnoxious unless they are in conjunction with something like a family garage sale or an appropriate fundraiser. I'm not exactly sure what bothers me about them. Is it the fact that little children are not only talking to strangers but waving them down as they drive or jog by? Is it that they are begging for quarters? Is it the time I have to spend helping to set up a table, gather supplies, make lemonade, clean up, etc.? I'm not sure, but every time my children ask me to do a lemonade stand my answer is, "No." Then why did we have a lemonade stand set up in front of our house last week?

The answer is another dislike of mine: persistent begging mixed with a little disrespect. When the children asked, and I said no, our little neighbor proceeded to give me reasons why they had to have a lemonade stand today and it would be easy. As annoyed as I was, I caved when they promised that they would do all of the work and that the neighbors would ask their mom if she would supervise so that they wouldn't be tormented or kidnapped by some crazy stranger.

When I finally made it outside, business was hopping. Unfortunately, I don't think my request for supervision made it down the street, so I ended up spending my time outside making sure the kids weren't too obnoxious and the strangers weren't too weird.

Children from three families participated in the business venture. I only got a few of them in the picture.

Our kids and the neighbors drank most of the lemonade, and I ended up doing most of the cleaning up. Emily kept watch from her perch in our tree which was just beginning to sprout leaves.
Now I believe I may have myself in a bind. The next day, one of our little neighbor boys came knocking on our door. When I answered, he asked, "Can we do a lemonade stand again today?" Guess what my answer was? I have fulfilled my quote of obnoxious lemonade stand sales for the year.

As our first Iowa-born baby, Sean has already accumulated a variety of Hawkeye paraphernalia. I dressed him all up the other day and took his picture. I forgot to include his yellow and black striped blanket. I suppose that would have been a little overkill.
Sean is growing a lot lately. He was almost 14 pounds one month ago. He is in the 90th percentile for weight, 90th percentile for height, and 50th percentile for head circumference.
He is sleeping through the night more often. He has made it all night two times now. If he does wake up, he usually only wakes up once. I'm glad to not feel so much like a zombie so that I can give up having to take a nap every day. Even though I don't take naps, I don't seem to be getting much more done. I guess that's just life, though.

Emily, Makayla, and I went to an American Girl Doll Fashion Show on Saturday morning. It was a fundraiser for the Iowa Children's Museum. We went because two of Emily's friends were models in the show. Emily and Makayla had the opportunity to be models also, but were too afraid of walking in front of people in clothes they may have been unsure about.
It was a cute event. My only regret was that we didn't have more time together to go out to lunch or something afterward. We had to hurry home because Sean needed my attention and Makayla had a birthday party she had to get to.
Later that night, we went out to dinner as a family. As much as I don't like the expense of eating out and I usually don't love the food, I like that the kids get so excited and that they are fairly well-behaved so that we can do things together as a family without creating too much commotion.

I'm with you on the lemonade stand thing. It's just not worth it. I've told my kids that they have to invest the money for the lemonade and then i'll let them do it. The requests have been less since then. Sean is getting cute! I sure miss you guys.
You are such a good Mom! And your kids are getting so big. Love all the Hawkeye clothes on Sean. We don't have any Lehigh stuff for this little one. Dave just keeps saying he needs to get him BYU and Jazz stuff.

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
