Emily in a Million Words or Less

Those who have experienced school as a child or parent know about those homework assignments that, though intended for the children, are often completed by adults.  I've experienced a few of those assignments:  building a model of the Taj Mahal out of clay; creating a motorized boat from a bleach bottle, balloons, and straws; countless posterboard projects, etc.  As our children get older, I find these "projects" occur more often and I do not look forward to them.  Emily is less than 3 weeks into junior high and I found myself completing a homework assignment already!  However, this kind of assignment was right up my alley.  First of all, it was directed specifically to the parents (not one of those projects that requires parental "support").  My assignment was to write an essay about Emily to be read to her class so that they could get to know her a little better.  The essay follows below:

There are a lot of things I could write about Emily to help you to get to know her better, but I believe the most helpful phrase is, “What you see is what you get.” When people meet Emily for the first time, their first impression usually is that she is a sweet girl. That is so true. Emily is a genuinely kind person. She doesn’t have ulterior motives. She won’t talk behind your back or secretly wish you harm. She is not vying for attention or recognition. She sincerely cares about and is sensitive toward others. She is careful about what she says or does because she doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. If she believes she may have inadvertently caused somebody harm, she is quick to apologize. She is helpful, patient, and kind.

Those are some obvious traits people recognize when they meet and interact with Emily. However, there are other things about Emily that you should know. She is a hard worker. Evidence of her hard work ethic is not only seen in her school work, but also in her interests and life at home. She is a great basketball player and has developed into a phenomenal shooter through her hard work ethic. She practices basketball nearly every day. She also plays the piano and has shown discipline as a piano player by organizing her schedule so that she has time to not only practice, but also play songs she enjoys. When she is assigned a chore at home, she rarely makes excuses, but does her best to get the chore done and to do it well.

Emily has always liked crafts. She likes to scrapbook with her Grandma (Mom doesn’t have the patience or the time). She also likes to make signs and decorations for her bedroom to go along with the seasons or holidays. She makes lovely greeting cards and can find a way to create just about anything she would like given the proper materials.

Emily is a great big sister. She has one younger sister and three younger brothers. She is kind and patient with the little ones and a good friend for her closest sister, Makayla.

Overall, Emily is a joy to have in our family and I know she will be a great addition to your class this year.
