FIRST WEEK IN MEXICO

August 12, 2022

OK, it's been a while since I last emailed you because I was traveling to Mexico City México to start my in-person mtc!!!!
So, where should I start? I LOVE IT HERE. It's really hard to describe in words how it feels here. Let's say it's probably the most spiritual experience I've ever had. I'll set this email into three sections. The first section contains some of the crazy things I have eaten and then some weird stuff I have done. The second one is some spiritual experiences i have had here at the MTC. The last will be a bunch of photos, videos, and explanations.

OK, so here we go on the crazy stuff. The first weird thing happened while I was sitting in on my first class at the MTC. I was chilling in class listening to my teacher teach us some Espanol when this huge moth flew in and landed on my knee yall right now, I think I am over exaggerating, but I do not trust me; when you see the photo, you will know, and it doesn't stop there the bug came back a second time for revenge, but I ran away like a little boy because the thing was coming for my face and it was scary. A couple of days later, we saw the stupid thing again, and it was coming for me, so as I said, I ran like a little boy again.

The second story has to do with milk, and let's just say it got a little dirty and messy. It all began on pizza night right before we watched elder gong live. One of the guys in my zone decided that he would eat four pieces of pizza and then two chocolate glasses of milk, and then two bowls of cereal; at the time, none of us knew that he was Lacto intolerant, but it turned out he was because, as we went into the meeting he turns to his companion and tells man I've got to go, and then his companion said man hold on until the presidents have done, so they wait and wait and then his companion looks over, and there are tears in his eyes, and his face is red, so they decided it was time to let him go so one companion gets up, but the one didn't he stayed in his seat in pain eventually he gets up and slowly walks to the bathroom and then is stuck in there for twenty minutes realizing his bowels. We learned a valuable lesson that night don't give elder Rodriguez milk, or else your night won't is fun.

I have plenty of more stories about where that came from, but I am running out of time, so I am just gonna share the things that were the most spiritual this week. Which turned out to be when we were in the temple, and as a missionary, at least for me, it was a completely different experience. I got to do work for a guy who has been waiting for his work since 2014, which is kind of crazy. Anyways I took his name through the temple, and while I was sitting in the celestial room, I could feel the presence of the guy I was doing the work for, and I could also feel the presence of my heavenly father, which was really cool to feel and experience. It only confirmed to me that the temple is one of the best places to be, so I recommend trying to get there as often as you can. I also had an amazing experience teaching a guy. as most of you know, I am not good at Spanish. Well, in this lesson, my companion and I had to go off script because we had already taught this guy once. While off script, I said many things I don't usually say and words that are usually way too hard for me to say. This was super cool because it confirmed to me that the lord watches out for us and that he does prepare a way for us.

I don't have enough time to explain the pictures I am going to share, but most of them are just me and my crazy adventures.

I love you all and hope you have a great week this week. Remember, the lord is always willing to help you out.

Love,
Elder

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...

My Legacy Stinks

Letters from the Nest https://lettersfromthenest.substack.com/p/my-legacy-stinks Lately, I have been asking you, “What will you do to make Sunday special?” This is me encouraging you in your worship without giving you a prescribed list of things to do. One thing I do differently on Sundays is that I read a Sunday book that’s “different” than the fiction I read during the week. Usually, it’s a religious book, but sometimes it’s an inspiring biography or narrative nonfiction with an uplifting theme. My Sunday book for the past few months has been “Both Things Are True,” by Kate Holbrook. This collection of essays explores a range of topics, including faith, forgiveness, women’s roles, trials, history, and more. Each chapter contains a dichotomy that fuels the discussion. For example, the chapter on forgiveness explores both the concepts of forgetting and remembering. Last Sunday, I began reading the chapter entitled "The Weight of Legacy," in which she discusses the dichotomy ...

Lyme Disease??

Let me just preface this by saying that I am soooo grateful for good health insurance. I have been to the Dr. for the kids lately so often, that I am embarrassed that they recognize our family when we walk in the door. So, here's Ricky's story. A couple of weeks ago he was extremely sick. He had a fever for over a week, complained that he couldn't move his legs, and ended up with an awful looking rash all over his body. We went to the Dr. 2 times for this. The first time, she said, it was a virus and it should run its course. When Ricky was getting worse, instead of better, we took him back in to a quick clinic where the nurse diagnosed him with strep (even though the short test was negative). Well, after a priesthood blessing and antibiotics (which we discovered later that he didn't even need to take--and in fact they may have made him feel worse), he got better. Then, last week, I discovered a new, crazy rash on his legs which continued to grow, turn purple on the in...
