The Sean Allen Fan Club

Last night was a tough one for us. At six weeks old, Sean was beginning to sleep for a good 5-6 hour stretch in the night. However, as many of you know, a little congestion changes everything. He has a little cold, so he was miserable last night. As a result, my total hours of interrupted sleep can be counted on one hand. I am exhausted today, but since it is Spring Break and the kids are home from school, I don't have my usual 1-hour window for a quiet afternoon nap. In addition, construction continues on our house. The contractor who installed our new built in shelves in the family room finally got a missing part in for our fireplace and they have been installing it for the last couple of hours or so. I thought they would only be here for a short visit in the morning, but as nap time draws near, they are still banging on the outside of the house, re-installing the vinyl that they had to remove to adjust the fireplace venting.

My sleepless night has caused me to think about the sacrifices we make for our children. Each of our sweet children is a blessing to our home in spite of (and maybe even because of) the challenges they bring us. Sean is no exception. I love him more than I love the hours of sleep I will miss because of him. I love him more than I love all of the pairs of pants I can't wear because I still have 20 pounds to lose. I love him more than I love a clean, organized house. He has only been with us six weeks, but we are all big fans of our little guy.

So, even though I have dark circles under my eyes, I will smile because the challenge is worth it. I am definitely a fan.Sean's brothers and sisters are also very fond of him. He spends his waking hours being passed from person to person and most of the time he doesn't mind.

So, if you see me being impatient or rude because of lack of sleep, remind me to take a look at our precious baby boy and I'll try to remember to be grateful instead of grouchy.

He looks like Emily did as a baby! So true about kids. Although I'm not feeling so grateful for them right now because they're climbing on my back and pulling my hair as I write this.

I miss you all. I am a member of the Sean Allen club even though I haven't met him. He is so cute. I can't wait to meet him and get to know his little personality. I love the picture of Ricky and him. You are one of my heroes Bonni! I am so grateful that you and and my sisters all all great examples of Mom's. How do you do it all with 5? I am wondering how I will survive two.

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...

My Legacy Stinks

Letters from the Nest https://lettersfromthenest.substack.com/p/my-legacy-stinks Lately, I have been asking you, “What will you do to make Sunday special?” This is me encouraging you in your worship without giving you a prescribed list of things to do. One thing I do differently on Sundays is that I read a Sunday book that’s “different” than the fiction I read during the week. Usually, it’s a religious book, but sometimes it’s an inspiring biography or narrative nonfiction with an uplifting theme. My Sunday book for the past few months has been “Both Things Are True,” by Kate Holbrook. This collection of essays explores a range of topics, including faith, forgiveness, women’s roles, trials, history, and more. Each chapter contains a dichotomy that fuels the discussion. For example, the chapter on forgiveness explores both the concepts of forgetting and remembering. Last Sunday, I began reading the chapter entitled "The Weight of Legacy," in which she discusses the dichotomy ...

Lyme Disease??

Let me just preface this by saying that I am soooo grateful for good health insurance. I have been to the Dr. for the kids lately so often, that I am embarrassed that they recognize our family when we walk in the door. So, here's Ricky's story. A couple of weeks ago he was extremely sick. He had a fever for over a week, complained that he couldn't move his legs, and ended up with an awful looking rash all over his body. We went to the Dr. 2 times for this. The first time, she said, it was a virus and it should run its course. When Ricky was getting worse, instead of better, we took him back in to a quick clinic where the nurse diagnosed him with strep (even though the short test was negative). Well, after a priesthood blessing and antibiotics (which we discovered later that he didn't even need to take--and in fact they may have made him feel worse), he got better. Then, last week, I discovered a new, crazy rash on his legs which continued to grow, turn purple on the in...
