Trips Through The Park

 August 28, 2023

What is going on my people?? Espero que todo su semana fue re bien pero si no ahora esto va a cambiar porque usted esta leyendo mi correo entonces jaja pero bueno!

So this week was a week full of ups and ups and then little drops and then more ups. So let's get into it.

On Tuesday, we get out in the morning and start talking to people. I see this one guy and I'm thinking it would be dope if we asked him if he was Christian. We end up telling him about The First Vision and the Book of Mormon. We invite him to read The Book of Mormon because it's dope, but the guy says he can't accept it because it's not the Bible 🤌🏻 Well, obviously, it's not the Bible! We explain that we also believe in the bible, and The Book of Mormon supports and testifies of The Bible. We try again to give him a copy of The Book of Mormon, but he rejects it again. 😭 But it's all good because he ends up still wanting to learn more, so we get his name and his number and we've been talking ever since haha.

After that, we book it back home, make pizza for lunch, and get down to perfecting our lesson on the Restoration so that all can accept it. After that, we get out to work again and run down to a couple of points. The first one wasn't there, but going there helped us find a girl who's interested named Morena. On our way back, our first friend, Gaston, stops us and is all like, "Bro, what are y'all doing in my area?" We tell him we're teaching, of course. He goes, "Walk with me." We give him a lesson while walking through a park. It's probably one of the coolest lessons I've been a part of because all we did was walk through a park and talk haha.

Wednesday, we had a lesson with our high-energy friend, Ximena, and she's PRAYING!! It's always a cool experience with her because she's like me, but much more energy, haha. Also, she kept saying that her dad is, and I quote, "El siempre esta inujado no se porque." This is good because she's now realizing that it's a challenge that her dad won't let her choose for herself about joining the church.

Thursday was super slow because we had to plan and study, so a lot of our day was thrown out the window. But Elder Rojas and I have a goal to become jacked (big muscles) so that our siblings don't have anything over us, haha. (In reality I'm getting him stronger, so that his mind is on something else and so he's happy but it's working so I'm ok, haha). Also on Thursday, Elder Rojas made a video for Facebook, sooo keep your eyes out. On Friday I had divisions with Elder Marshall, and it was dope. I learned a lot of Argentine slang from kids, and then I got to teach a family which was soo dope. Also Elder Marshall pulled a prank on me. He went down the steps and knocked on our front door. So I opened up, and there was a girl there. I'm like, "Hello, we're missionaries." I was super awkward. I guess I'm kind of like a robot now.

On Saturday we got to see native Argentina Dancers and it was sooo cool. It made me miss home a little because I can only dance to the youth album, and it's low key fun, but I need some Justin Bieber, you know? On Sunday we had another walk through the park with Gaston and we met four new friends, so that was dope!!

I hope you all have a great and wonderful week, and I'll see y'all next week! I love you all so much and miss you tons more!!

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
