BAPTISM WEEK

March 20, 2023

Hey, how's it going, guys!?! It's Elder Mergenthaler, back again with a weekly update!

I thought this week was going to be like the last few where we go out to talk to people, but don't find many people, but, boy, was I wrong.

Monday and Tuesday are pretty typical, but Wednesday I decide to write our name and number on like 30 cards to give out. We go out and talk to people in the morning. No one listens, so we come back, have an amazing lunch, and finish our studies. After that we start walking out to our points when I get this urge to visit one of our friends named Lucas. We change our plans and book it over there. It turns out he's not there, so we knock the next door of one of our other friends, and they're not there either, so my companion and I are like, "What now?" My comp suggests the forest. As we're walking, I say we should pray to know exactly where to go. (BTW, praying works everywhere, hahaha. I do it legit in streets with cars passing). So we stop and pray. After our prayer, we decide we'll just talk to whoever we find in the forest.

First, we meet Juan. Dude is dope. We talk to him for a little bit and get his number but he needs to go enjoy his cigar, so we do our Argentine-like handshake, which is dope BTW, and as I'm going, hot ash comes off Juan's cigar onto my arm. Ouch! I'm good tho. It was just weird having cigar ash on my arm 😅

After Juan, we talk to people, making new contacts left and right! Can I pause here to tell you Argentina has some of the cutest little kids ever?! After contacting in the forest, we go to the church at like 8 and do some Facebooking to follow our mission president's advice to schedule more Facebook work in.

Then we come home and just vibe and make food and that was that!

Thursday is more sketch. We do all our morning stuff, and get a text saying, "ayy Elders I'd love for yall to speak Sunday!!" (I dodged it with complications with divisions, but my companion didn't) We ate lunch with members and did some contacting. We run into a Jehovas Witness. The dude's dope and says he'll love to talk, but just about the Bible, which I vibe with, so we get his number and set up an appointment. We get to our  When we get to our point, I immediately feel like we shouldn't be there--first because we probably saw a drug deal and some other stuff go down on our way which threw us off a bit.  OK, so we get there and this guy has Bob Marley hair and he looks at us for a solid like 5 minutes like he wanted to do something but couldn't, and then he says Thanks and walks off! BRO, I'M NOT EVEN KIDDING his thanks legit felt like the voodooman from Princess and the Frog. It was scary, but also weird because I felt like I was in a Disney movie. Anyway, we headed out of there super quick. Contacts a few JWs again. Wahoo. They're cool people--just really argumentative.

Friday was lame, but Saturday was so legit. After a member lesson, we visit a dude who might be interested, and it turns out he's really interested, so we end up teaching the first lesson. We went to noche de hogar (family home evening) and have a blast with family. We share pics of the USA and stuff like that and just enjoy our time together hahaha. Oh, BTW, that reminds me if y'all have photos of the USA, send them to me people here love photos from the USA.

Sunday also was chill in the afternoon, but during the sacrament meeting one of the Bishop's counselors gets my attention, so I walk out and he's like, "Do you have the key for the baptismal font?" I'm like, "Ya," so I give it to him as we walk over together we see that the baptismal font flooded over because our Bishop forgot to turn it off. So I spent the last 40 minutes with members cleaning up a river of water out of our church! But then we got to have a baptism! It was so cool because the guy that baptized his daughter just got the priesthood like a week ago.

Remember, the Lord's got your back!!

I love and miss you all tons!!

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
