We Had a Baptism Once Again

March 6, 2023

What is up, people of the United States? I'm back again with another email from Argentina 🇦🇷!!

This week was kind of wild and went by super fast.

On Monday after preparation day, we start divisions where we break off in different partnerships. On our way back to our district leader's pension, his comp turns to him and is like, "Yo, you got the keys?" and my district leader goes, "No!" So me and the district leader head back to the other church to look for the keys. They weren't in the first place we checked, so we waited to get into the computer place to check there. No keys. We're in kind of hurry because we have to get to a dinner in my area, so we go back and look in one more spot, and BAM, keys!!! We ended up getting the keys, so that was all ok, but we had to cancel the dinner. 😪

On Tuesday, I get up and do my normal routine--push-ups and sit-ups while I wait for my comp to take a shower. (BTW I haven't lost any of the muscle soo that's kind of a big +) Well, then I realize I'm not with my comp because we're on divisions, soo I take the shower first. When we're both ready to go out, we go contacting and literally no one opens up because it feels like the devil's oven with hot humidity. We want to give up, but we knock another door, and a man opens up and we're like, "What's up, Dude?" or in Spanish, que anda o que tal. Anyways, he's like, "Oh, hi!!" Well, we get to talking, and this guy tells us, "Dude, ya man. I don't do drugs at all. I don't even drink alcohol." I'm thinking this man's gold until he says, "But I do smoke Mary Jane, but it's not a drug because it comes from the earth and because I can smoke it in my house tranquilo aka chill."  Welp, that's when I thought, I guess we might have some work to do with him. We set up a time to come back for another visit.

Wednesday was kind of boring, but Thursday was interesting. We had a lunch appointment way out from our house, so me and my companion mapped out a bunch of stops to check in with people we know. Right before we get to lunch, we met a gold person who wants to hear us and wants us to talk to her kids, so that's amazing!! Usually, I'm cool with any food, but this time we were fed this thing called gnocchi.  It's like noodles, but different. I do fine with the first plate, maybe a little full. But I still go ahead and eat this fruit jello thing. Little did I know, a second round of the noodle stuff is coming up. I conquer the second round of noodle stuff, we say our goodbyes, and that's where things get interesting. So, we live like an hour out from this house, walking because we don't have this thing you guys call a car. As we are walking, I get this heavy feeling. You know what I'm talking about? I'm thinking, does gnocchi have a lot of fiber?  I tell my comp we need to pick up the pace. So we book it home. Somehow, I kept the pipes backed up until we got back to our apartment, but can I tell you, the human body is insane!

FRIDAY WE HAD A BAPTISM of a guy who's been an amigo of the church for forever, so that was really special and cool to see. And now we're just waiting a week for him to baptize his daughter on the 18th, soo ya kind of crazy what the Lord has done with this family. And I'm really excited for them to eventually go to the temple together because it would be really cool for them to be sealed for eternity. (On this topic I feel like the wards I'm in are getting younger and younger. Families are having babies left and right. Baby fever?)

Saturday was kind of boring until one of our contacts turned out to be an argumentative Catholic that didn't believe in an afterlife and also that women weren't important. The only woman that he considered important was Mary, mother of Jesus. Once he brought that up, I kicked my companion's shoe so hard, we were out of there before he could say anything else. I hope that guy ends up learning a little more from different people but he'll probably not talk with us again.

Anyway, that's a little about my week and some of the experiences I've had! I wish you all luck and miss you tons!!

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
