I LOST MY BUS

January 23, 2023

Hey everyone!! We're back at it again with the life of Elder Mergenthaler!

After p-day last week,  I was supposed to take a bus down to Bahía Blanca, but I got there at the wrong time, so I ended up doing missionary work with my district leader instead. As my new comp-for-the-day and I were heading back to my house, we talked to the taxi driver about the church. It turns out he's low-key interested in our church and in the USA, but, I mean, hey, you get what you get, hahaha. So when he drops us off, we get his Facebook and tell him we'll message him!! 😌

That same day we were able to contact a lady who we couldn't find for a while, and guess what--our miracle new* from last week-- that was his mom!!! Kind of weird, but also a miracle. After that, we went to dinner with this family and talked about life, the future, and everything in between, haha, but while I'm on this topic, I don't know if I've told you guys, but ever since I've been on a mission I've been really looking forward to when I can have kids of my own one day. To be honest, wanting kids might just be because I can't go up and give the kids on my missions the biggest Ricky hug ever. Just the rules. But literally, my desire to have a family has skyrocketed since I've been on the mission because families are pretty special.

On Wednesday, I got back with my real companion Elder Sellers, and we had a weird morning. To be honest, again, this whole week was weird, but que va hacer?? So on Wednesday, we have a lesson with one of our friends named Jorge, who is doing really great. Well, we get to his house, and the first thing we see is this big white dog literally trying to kill this black dog, so we just stand there because there's a gate in between us. The dog takes a break, but starts up again, so this little boy comes out with huge bricks and starts throwing them at the dog's head to get him distracted. Well, that doesn't work, so my companion starts to roar like Beast from Beauty and the Beast (don't ask me why). Finally, they get the dog in the cage, and the black dog escapes. After that, our lesson kind of went downhill because we tried to ask Jorge to be baptized, but he wasn't quite ready.

On Thursday, we helped this guy clean up grass clippings in his yard for like 2 hours, and then we taught the guy's wife. She's not a member, but the thing that's rough with her is that she's too comfortable in her life to make changes or to want to see for herself if this thing is really real, but we're working on it.

On Friday, I had divisions with our zone leaders, so that meant I went to another area!! During our divisions, I was able to see not only how to work hard, but what to do when nobody is in the street, so that was really helpful!! I also got Naruto stickers from the guy I was on splits with, so that was cool! But literally, that rest of the week was boring except for Sunday.

So, on Sunday, we're greeting all the members at the door when one of the Elders Quorum dudes comes up and asks me and my companion if we would bless the sacrament in Spanish. Obviously, we say yes but when I said yes, on the inside I was saying no only because it was in Spanish, but let me tell you, the Lord carried me through because I'm here now writing an email. Anyway, after that, we had a class with all the old dudes, and guess who was there? Jorge! And guess what our lesson was about? It was all about what we taught him on Wednesday! So that's also a little miracle for us.

I hope your week was good and that everyone was safe!!

Love,

Elder Mergenthaler

That Sinking Feeling - Real Talk From Your Mother

Also found at Letters from the Nest:   https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/that-sinking-feeling?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Dear Nestlings, I hope you don’t mind a little stream-of-consciousness letter today. I don’t know if I have anything specific to share, so let’s see what floats to the surface. It’s a bright fall Friday morning. These last few weeks in central Pennsylvania have been lovely, sunny, and warm. I know winter is coming, so I try to be outside as much as possible to take advantage of the sun before it hibernates. I just completed the forty-minute round trip to drive one of you to the high school. You know who you are, but maybe in a few years, when you read this, you won’t know because every one of you has missed the bus sometimes and has endured lectures about planning better and showing your respect for my work by not requiring forty minutes of my life for your convenience. Anyway, everybody is at school and work except...

Gavin in a Million Words or Less

Way back when Emily was in 6th grade, her teacher, Ms. Grey, asked parents to write about thier children in a million words or less. I posted what I wrote about Emily on our blog. I wish I were more organized and tech-savvy to find the link to that post and put it here, but I'm not. It's a nice idea that maybe I'll do later. Anyway, you get to read what I wrote to Gavin's fifth grade teacher who made the same requests of parents: Gavin is the youngest of seven children. His three oldest siblings have flown the nest, so he talks to them on the phone and looks forward to holiday visits. This summer, his oldest sister had a baby, so he’s an Uncle! He has three older brothers, who sometimes make life tricky for him, but are also sources of wisdom, rides to the store to get candy, and annoying TikTok phrases. He sometimes wants to be more grown up than he actually is. This little guy is academically oriented. He loves to read BIG books. He rarely reads a standalone nove...

Back To School Meanies

Letter From the Nest August 15, 2025 https://open.substack.com/pub/lettersfromthenest/p/back-to-school?r=48qui&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web One August, more than twenty years ago, at an evening book club discussion, my “older” friends (now I look back and know those women were the age I am now), were discussing the woes and triumphs of back-to-school season. One woman was anticipating her youngest child’s senior year of high school. She said, “For more than two decades, our lives have revolved around the school district’s academic calendar. I don’t know how I will plan my life without knowing about school breaks or holidays.” I remember her bittersweet tone as she anticipated freedom from school schedule constraints but also mourned how those constraints guided her choices. What would she do? Other women joined the discussion, wondering if their kids would have good teachers, if they’d be able to balance volunteering in the classroom, how to streamline school supply pu...
